Signage at McLain High School

Tulsa Public Schools is committed to moving forward with the recommendation from the North Tulsa Community Education Task Force on the McLain Feeder Pattern.

At Tulsa Public Schools, we believe our community is essential and that our schools are vital to the health of the communities we serve. We must work together as a team to ensure that our children are successful, and we must do more to improve the experiences that students have in our schools.

Because of these beliefs, the North Tulsa Community Education Task Force was convened and asked to develop a set of recommendations for our McLain feeder pattern schools.

The task force - a group of community members led by Reverend MC Potter - worked over four months to engage with each other and with community members to develop a set of recommendations for how to best serve students in the area, beginning in the 2019-2020 school year and beyond.

The North Tulsa Community Education Task Force recommended a Monroe middle school complex combining 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students be established. That complex will serve as the only middle school for the McLain feeder pattern and would be located at Monroe Demonstration Academy and Penn Elementary School.

We at Tulsa Public Schools are committed to moving the recommendation forward. If approved by the Board of Education, launching in 2019-2020:

  • Students currently in 5th and 6th grade in the McLain Feeder Pattern will attend the Monroe Demonstration Academy middle schools campus;
  • Rising 8th graders from McLain 7th Grade Academy will attend the Monroe Demonstration Academy middle school campus;
  • Students who live in the Penn Elementary School area and are currently in grades pre-K-4th will have a new neighborhood school. Depending on their home address, their new neighborhood school will be either Anderson Elementary School or Hawthorne Elementary School;
  • Students who live in the Penn Elementary School area and are currently enrolling in pre-K for 2019-2020 will also have a new neighborhood school, and we will ensure that those families have updated information; and
  • Students who do not live in the Penn Elementary School area and are currently in grades pre-K-4th at Penn will have the option to attend either Anderson Elementary School or Hawthorne Elementary School. They may also attend their neighborhood school.

We will provide support for any family who wishes to transfer their child to another neighborhood school.

Tulsa Public Schools is also making an additional change that was not included with the North Tulsa Community Education Task Force recommendation. To ensure consistency across our McLain feeder elementary schools, Gilcrease Elementary and ECDC Bunche will become a pre-K-5th grade school housed at the Bunche building.
